Debbie spends the majority of her time coaching and training gymnasts at Weston Aerobic Gymnastic club. She combines running the gym club with very successful adult fitness classes and ensures that all gymnasts are given a chance to shine; at displays and competitions of all levels, right the way up to major internationals.

Even when away from the gymnasts she spends time choreographing routines, sourcing music, submitting competition entries, fielding emails and generally ensuring the gymnasts can get the maximum from their sport. This is a club with several International gymnasts who regularly represent Britain and return with medals to prove their worth on the International stage.

But the respect and enthusiasm she generates from her gymnasts is immense from the youngest at 3 years old up to 19 year olds. The children, especially the younger ones think she is “awesome”. Debbie also runs an extensive range of adult classes including step, pilates, yoga, sculpting and latino dance – not sure the adults would call her “awesome” but they keep coming back!!!

Debbie provides coaching opportunities for the gymnasts and adults to expand their skills and knowledge. Debbie shares her extensive knowledge and is highly qualified but the club is kept going by voluntary contributions so it would be amazing if Debbie could be recognised for her time, effort and dedication.

This is a brief description of both her and the club’s achievements:

  • British Gymnastics Aerobic coach of the year 2007
  • BBC sports personality unsung hero – south west 2008
  • Aerobic gymnastics national coach age 10-11
  • Weston Aerobic Gymnastics – first club in region to pass Gymmark
  • Leads a team of dedicated volunteer coaches and helpers
  • Has coached the gymnast who has won the most international medals
  • Actively promotes gymnastics for all, regardless of age, level or ability
  • At present has 5 gymnasts on national squad.

“Debbie shows a true passion in what she does and, despite working all hours for all age groups, she seems to have endless energy and enthusiasm.”

“Debbie puts her heart and soul into everything she does for the club. Nothing is too much and every gymnast is valued, encouraged and given the highest quality training to become the best they can be. Debbie is an amazing asset to Weston Aerobic Gymnastics!”

“I want to nominate Debbie Saunders as the Best Coach. She is a terrific inspiration to everyone as she has a fantastic energy and enthusiasm which she just spreads through all her classes. My 5 year old daughter absolutely loves going to Debbie’s classes and would not miss them for the world. Debbie has a natural approach and is empathic with all her members as well as the members’ parents. Debbie achieves amazing results as her members want to do well not just for their own benefits but to show their coach how they learn so much from her. Forget the rest , Debbie’s the Best!”

“Debbie makes the activities fun and interesting. She demonstrates the activities herself so that you can see all the experience and knowledge that she has. When you don’t think you’re doing that good she always re-assures you and builds your confidence so you can achieve. She always has a calm voice and has a good sense of humour towards the pupils.  I have tried other gyms and now wouldn’t go anywhere else”.
Caitlyn Harper aged 10

I would like to nominate my children’s gym coach, Debbie Saunders from Weston Sports Aerobics Club. She is generous with her time and wants the very best for her gymnasts. She is and has to be the driving force of the club, and her team of volunteers and coaches give so much to make it the club it is. It is a happy and worthwhile place for children of all abilities and Debbie is as happy with her top British Team gymnasts as she is with first timers. They are all given equal time and coaching, making each child feel worthwhile and part of a TEAM.
